Friday — Yawm al-Jumuʿah — is the crown of the week in Islam. The Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ described it as the best day upon which the sun has risen. Here are twelve unique virtues of this blessed day, drawn from the Qurʾān and authentic Ḥadīth.
1. The Best Day of the Week
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. On it Ādam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it. The Hour will not be established except on Friday.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, no. 854)
2. A Day Chosen by Allah
Allah ﷻ chose Friday for the Muslim Ummah just as He chose Saturday for the Jews and Sunday for the Christians. He ﷻ guided us to it while previous nations were led astray from it. (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
3. A Ṣūrah Named After It
Allah ﷻ dedicated an entire Sūrah of the Qurʾān to Friday — Sūrah al-Jumuʿah (62). In it, He commands: “O you who believe! When the call to prayer is made on the day of Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave all trade.” (62:9)
4. The Hour of Acceptance
The Prophet ﷺ said: “On Friday there is an hour during which no Muslim stands and prays, asking Allah for something, except that Allah gives it to him.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, no. 935) The majority of scholars identify this blessed hour as between the time the Imām sits on the minbar until the prayer ends.
5. Increasing Salāwāt Upon the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Send abundant blessings upon me on Friday, for your blessings are presented to me.” (Abū Dāwūd, no. 1047) He ﷺ also said that whoever sends ṣalawāt upon him ﷺ 80 times on Friday will have 80 years of sins forgiven. (al-Bayhaqi)
6. The Day of Jumuʿah Prayer
Jumuʿah prayer is an individual obligation (farḍ ʿayn) upon every free, adult, sane Muslim male. The Prophet ﷺ warned: “Whoever misses three Jumuʿah prayers out of negligence, Allah will place a seal over his heart.” (Abū Dāwūd, no. 1052)
7. Reciting Sūrah al-Kahf
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever recites Sūrah al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays.” (al-Bayhaqi, al-Ḥākim — Ṣaḥīḥ) Many Muslims make this a weekly practice.
8. Sins Are Forgiven Between Fridays
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The five daily prayers, and from one Friday to the next, are expiation for what is between them, as long as major sins are avoided.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, no. 233)
9. Ādam Was Created on Friday
The creation of the father of humanity, Sayyidunā Ādam , took place on Friday — the last day of creation and the day upon which Allah ﷻ breathed the soul into him and completed His masterwork.
10. The Day of Resurrection Will Be a Friday
The Prophet ﷺ said the Hour will be established on a Friday. Every Friday, the angels await whether the Hour will come. It is the day that closes this world and opens the next.
11. Ghusl on Friday Is Highly Recommended
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Ghusl on Friday is an obligation on every adult male.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, no. 879) The Hanafi scholars classify it as a confirmed Sunnah (sunnah muʾakkadah), bringing the worshipper in a state of complete purity to the prayer.
12. The Day of ʾid for the Muslims
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Friday is the ʿEid of the Muslims.” (Ibn Mājah, no. 1098) Every week, the Ummah gathers in the houses of Allah ﷻ, hears the word of Allah ﷻ and His Prophet ﷺ, and departs forgiven. No other faith community has such a weekly renewal.
May Allah ﷻ grant us to honour every Friday — with Jumuʿah prayer, recitation of Sūrah al-Kahf, abundant ṣalawāt upon the Prophet ﷺ, and sincere duʾāʾ in the blessed hour. Āmīn.
