Sayyidunā Abū Bakr ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Quḥāfah al-Ṣiddīq ؓ — the first successor of the Prophet ﷺ and the greatest of all human beings after the Prophets — holds a station in Islam that is unique, profound, and eternally celebrated. He was the first adult male to embrace Islam, the closest companion of the Prophet ﷺ throughout his mission, and the anchor of the Ummah after the Prophet’s ﷺ passing.
His Name and Title
His name was ʿAbdullāh. He was known as Abū Bakr (Father of the Young Camel) before Islam. The Prophet ﷺ gave him the title al-Ṣiddīq — the Truthful One, the Verifier — because when the Quraysh mocked the account of the Isrāʾ and Miʿrāj, he said immediately: “If he said it, then it is true.” He was also called ʿAtīq (the Freed One) — a name the Prophet ﷺ gave him, saying he was freed from the Fire by Allah ﷻ.
His Embrace of Islam
Sayyidunā Abū Bakr ؓ was the first adult free male to embrace Islam — on the very day the Prophet ﷺ first shared his message with him. He did not hesitate, did not ask for signs, did not demand proof. He knew the Prophet’s ﷺ character and had not seen him tell a single lie in forty years of friendship. His immediate belief earned him his eternal title.
His Virtues in the Qurʾān
“The second of the two, when they were in the cave, when he said to his companion: Do not grieve, for Allah is with us.”
Sūrah al-Tawbah (9:40)
This verse refers to Abū Bakr ؓ in the Cave of Thawr during the Hijrah — the only Companion to make this blessed journey with the Prophet ﷺ. Imām al-Qurṭubī says this is the greatest honour given to any Companion in the Qurʾān.
His Virtues in the Sunnah
“If I were to take a khalil (intimate friend) other than my Lord, I would take Abū Bakr as my khalil. But the brotherhood of Islam and its love is sufficient. Close every door in this mosque except the door of Abū Bakr.”
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, no. 466
“Follow those who come after me: Abū Bakr and ʿUmar.”
Sunan al-Tirmidhī, no. 3662 — Ṣaḥīḥ
His Service to Islam
- His wealth: Abū Bakr ؓ spent virtually his entire fortune in the early years of Islam, purchasing and freeing enslaved Muslims who were being tortured for their faith — including Sayyidunā Bilāl ؓ
- The Cave: He shielded the Prophet ﷺ with his own body during the Hijrah, placing his foot over a hole in the cave floor to prevent a snake from reaching the Prophet ﷺ
- The Battles: He never wavered — at Uḥud when others fled, Abū Bakr ؓ remained with the Prophet ﷺ
- The Caliphate: After the Prophet’s ﷺ passing, he preserved the unity of the Ummah, sent armies to protect it from apostasy, and initiated the collection of the Qurʾān
His Passing
Sayyidunā Abū Bakr ؓ passed from this world on 22 Jumaada al-Thāniyah, 13 AH (634 CE) — just 2 years and 3 months after the Prophet’s ﷺ passing. He was 63 years old — the same age at which the Prophet ﷺ had passed. He is buried beside the Prophet ﷺ in Masjid al-Nabawī in Madīnah al-Munawwarah. Imām al-Ṭahāwī states in his ʿAqīdah: “We testify that Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ is the most virtuous of this Ummah.”
May Allah ﷻ be well pleased with Sayyidunā Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ, fill our hearts with his love, and grant us the ability to follow his example of total devotion to the Prophet ﷺ. Āmīn.
