Three Sūrahs Every Muslim Should Recite Daily: Yā-Sīn, al-Wāqiʿah, and al-Mulk

While every verse of the Qurʾān carries immeasurable blessing, the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ specifically highlighted certain Sūrahs for their extraordinary virtues. Among these, three stand out as particularly recommended for regular — ideally daily — recitation: Sūrah Yā-Sīn, Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah, and Sūrah al-Mulk.

1. Sūrah Yā-Sīn — The Heart of the Qurʾān

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, for everything there is a heart, and the heart of the Qurʾān is Yā-Sīn. Whoever recites Yā-Sīn, Allah will write for him the reward of reciting the Qurʾān ten times.” (al-Tirmidhī, no. 2887)

Sūrah Yā-Sīn is the 36th chapter of the Qurʾān. It covers the fundamentals of faith: the truth of Prophethood, the resurrection of the dead, the signs of Allah ﷻ in creation, and the fate of those who accept and reject the message. The scholars have recommended its recitation:

  • In the morning, as a protection and blessing for the day
  • Upon the dying, to ease their departure from this world
  • For the deceased, as its reward is dedicated to their souls

2. Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah — Protection from Poverty

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever recites Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah every night will never be afflicted by poverty.” (Shuʿab al-Įmān of al-Bayhaqi) Ibn Masʿud ؓ used to instruct his daughters to recite it every night.

Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah — the 56th chapter — deals with the reality of the Day of Judgement and the three categories of people: those brought near to Allah, those of the right hand, and those of the left. It reminds us of the origin of our food, water, fire, and life — all from Allah ﷻ — and calls us to gratitude and awareness of the next life.

3. Sūrah al-Mulk — The Protector in the Grave

The Prophet ﷺ said: “There is a Sūrah in the Qurʾān of thirty verses that intercedes for its companion until he is forgiven — it is [Sūrah] Tabāraka lladhī bi-yadihi’l-mulk.” (Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī — Ḥasan)

In another narration: “It protects its companion from the punishment of the grave.” (al-Ḥākim) Sūrah al-Mulk is the 67th chapter. It opens by affirming Allah’s absolute sovereignty over all creation and calls the reader to reflect on death, the purpose of life, and the signs of Allah ﷻ in the skies and the earth. Memorising and reciting it nightly is one of the most rewarding acts of worship a Muslim can establish.

How to Build the Habit

  • Recite Sūrah Yā-Sīn after Fajr
  • Recite Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah after ʿAsr or Maghrib
  • Recite Sūrah al-Mulk before sleeping

Together these three Sūrahs cover the morning, the evening, and the night — surrounding your day with Qurʾānic light, divine protection from poverty, and a guardian in the grave.

May Allah ﷻ make the Qurʾān the companion of our hearts, our intercessor in the grave, and our light on the Day of Judgement. Āmīn.
